King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

Recommended by Charlie.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard are a seven piece band from Australia. Although they only formed in 2010 the have released 15 studio albums (including 5 in 2017) as well as a number of EPs, singles, and live albums! Progressive rock may be the easiest way to describe them, but really they are not bound to any genre mixing in garage, surf, fusion, electronic, and thrash elements from album to album.

I was first introduced to the band by former Blasé DeBris member Earl Steenburg. Earl hooked me up with a copy "Polygondwanaland" an album that the band posted the master tapes completely free into the public domain for any label to put out. It's a bit folky at times, and doesn't prepare you for the monster attack of some of their other work, so it may not be the best place to start, though it got me hooked. You may want to start with possibly their most acclaimed record "Nonagon Infinity." This was constructed as an infinite loop so the final notes of the last song flow directly into the beginning of the first track. Press repeat on your CD player and you're set for life!

I was fortunate enough to catch these guys live and they can back up everything they have recorded. Tearing through incredibly complex pieces often at breakneck speed they always seemed in complete control of the chaos.

Here's a few samples of their equally creative music videos to get you started.
